Upside Down Cherry Pudding

2 cups sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup butter
1½ cups flour
1½ tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
1 cup milk
2 cups pitted cherries
1 cup sugar
1 cup hot water
Cream together butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Alternate stirring in milk and flour, salt and powder. Turn batter into oblong pan. Sprinkle 1 cup sugar on cherries; spread over batter. Pour hot water on top. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes. Serve with whipped cream.
